This type of hook is predominantly used in Tunisian crochet (also know as Cro-Hooking or Cro-Knitting).

Having two hooks on opposite ends will allow you to create two-coloured pieces that will have dominantly one colour on one side and a different colour on the reverse side.

Double sided crochet hooks are also indespensable for doing Tunisian crochet in the round.
