About the Brassolaeliocattleya Orchid

Cattleya (pronounced cat-lee-uh) takes its name from a Mr William Cattley, a keen North London amateur of the early 19th century who took particular interest in the genus.

There are approximately sixty species of Cattleya. They come from a wide range of habitats and heights in the jungle, being found mostly on forest trees. Although originating in extremely humid areas, they are now grown under much drier conditions with greater success.

Cattleya also crosses with Brassavola to form a group known as Brassocattleya, these in turn have been crossed with the Laelias to form Brassolaeliocattleyas.

Others in the series are: Cattleya, Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium
