About the Giraffe

The Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis, lives in the grasslands of tropical Africa. It is the tallest animal in the world, growing to a height of eighteen feet, or somewhere in the vicinity of 6 metres. Its long neck enables it to reach and eat the top leaves of the Acacia tree, its main food.

When the Giraffe wants a drink, it has to bend its long, slender legs until it can get its mouth to the water. Fortunately for the Giraffe, it doesn't have to drink very often.

Giraffes have good sight, hearing and smell, and can run very fast. Their 'patchwork' markings help them to blend into the background. If a Giraffe is attacked it will kick wildly.

The knobs on top of the head are skin-covered horns. They usually sleep standing up.

This particular Giraffe was photographed at Tooronga Park Zoo by Erica Griffith of Timaru, New Zealand.
