About the Cassowary

The Cassowary is a flightless bird, growing to a height of 1.6 metres (approximately 5' 3"). It inhabits the dense rainforest of Far North Queensland and parts of Papua New Guinea.

They are extremely timid birds, leaving the thicker parts of the forest towards evening or early in the morning. They eat mainly native fruits and seeds, but occasionally small animals and reptiles. The sexes are the same colour as each other with the female being larger than the male. The male incubates the eggs, usually 3 to 6 dark green, which are laid on a platform about 90 cm across. Both parents raise the young.

Unfortunately, many are accidentally killed by motorists in the Mission Beach area South of Cairns.

The Cassowary has often been known to attack humans, especially at breeding time.
